From Existing to Living

Politically and socioeconomically speaking, the world is pretty unstable right now. I doubt many readers would disagree with this.

Although New Insights is proud to have trainee coaches and certified coaches all over the world, our main markets are the UK and South Africa.

And right now both countries, in particular, are currently experiencing a level of political and socioeconomic uncertainty not felt for a long time.

As we citizens struggle to make sense of the upheaval, it is tempting to point a finger of blame at our leaders, whinge and complain amongst ourselves and then sit back and hope that the whole mess sorts itself out soon.

But that would amount to simply existing … when we really should be living!

“The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have.”

– Louis E. Boone

2016 – A Year of Change

This will be the last Life Coaching Insights Blog Post for 2016 as I join many of you esteemed readers in taking a well deserved break for a few weeks!

As the year draws to a close there will surely be no lack of pronouncements by the various media on how it, and the various events that characterised it, stacked up in importance to – and affect on – the human race.

Here’s how I see it:

“The new year will be like the old one if you keep on doing the same old things.”

– Jean-Paul Malfatti

The Purpose of Life

On our Facebook page we proudly proclaim support for Robert Byrne’s classic uttering: “The purpose of life is a life of purpose”.

It’s such a lovely phrase, simple, yet rich in meaning. After all what can be more meaningful that living a life of purpose?

But, if you have no idea what your purpose in life is (and, believe it or not, that is true for most) then you may find the statement to be somewhat confusing and frustrating.

It may therefore help to look at the purpose of life in a different way.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Living with Uncertainty

You’ll no doubt have heard the old adage that change is the only constant in life.

Well, given the twists and turns of life in the 21st century, it would seem that we can add ‘increasing uncertainty’ as another.

If you tune into world news and events you’ll no doubt agree with the statement above. Our world, whether that be our climate, our politics, our economics, or our society in general, is becoming more unpredictable at a faster and faster rate.

For most of us, having to cope with increasing uncertainty is at best, unsettling and at worst, downright terrifying.

But why exactly is this and what can we do to adjust?

“Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.”

– John Allen Paulos

Just the One

We live in what seems to be an immensely challenged and challenging world.

The vast and growing number of people living on earth today pose an unprecedented challenge to the ability of our planet and its environment to sustain life as we have always known it.

At the same time, despite quantum advances in technology life, for most of us, is more challenging than ever before.

We are living in a time when it is easy to contemplate these issues and conclude that we are, individually, of little or no significance or relevance in the greater scheme of things.

A simple glance skywards on a clear night might be enough to reinforce the perception that each of is no more important than a tiny ant in a huge anthill or a grain of sand in the desert.

“I am just one human being.”

– Dalai Lama

True Freedom

When we launched New Insights Africa in 2007 and rebranded New Insights UK when the two businesses were brought together in 2012, we introduced three words which represent the aspiration we have for people who are exposed to our training and our coaching system:

FREEDOM – CONFIDENCE – GROWTH

Personal growth and self-fulfilment is, deep down, perhaps the highest need that we strive to meet as humans.

But we cannot hope to achieve this unless we are fully self aware, confident individuals.

And to become so we need to be free of all the limiting beliefs and negative emotions of fear, anger and resentment that plague us.

I’m sure you’ll agree that this notion of freedom is a little different from that which most people might associate with.

“True freedom is the capacity for acting according to one’s true character, to be altogether one’s self, to be self-determined and not subject to outside coercion.”

– Corliss Lamont
