Life Coaching: A Career for the 21st Century

Quite recently, an old school friend who I hadn’t heard from for some forty odd years made contact on Facebook. To my surprise it turned out that he had been living around the corner from us for many years.

The ease with which we were able to reconnect after all that time, spurred him on to start and promote a Facebook group for all those who were in our final high school year. Now we have a thriving little community all enthusiastically indulging in a bit of “Remember the time …”

It got me reflecting on a question that I suspect is in the back of many people’s minds.

Is the world becoming a better or a worse place?

Fair Exchange

“Coaches HATE selling” screamed the headline of an advert for an online course that I saw on Facebook recently.

It was clearly aimed at life coaches who, well, find the idea of selling their services difficult, to say the least. And I would guess that that applies to most who take up this career – at least in the early stages.

You might find it interesting to know that each of us has a unique preference for the way in which we like to receive, learn and internally represent new information and experiences.

This knowledge can be particularly helpful in relationships and in careers that involve educating, helping or motivating people (teachers and life coaches are two examples).

Before I explain any more about these different channels of learning and representation (commonly called ‘modalities’) – and so that you do not unfairly prejudge what I have to say – I would invite you to explore your own preferred learning modality.

Respect for Diversity

Is there anyone who can say, with hand on heart, that they are not in awe of – or at the very least inspired by – the amazing diversity of scenery, climate, trees, plants, animals, fish and even insects that we are so privileged to be surrounded by on this beautiful planet of ours?

I have yet to come across such a person!

Why is it, then, that so many humans struggle to come to terms with the issue of diversity within our own species?
