Life Coaching: A Career for the 21st Century

Quite recently, an old school friend who I hadn’t heard from for some forty odd years made contact on Facebook. To my surprise it turned out that he had been living around the corner from us for many years.

The ease with which we were able to reconnect after all that time, spurred him on to start and promote a Facebook group for all those who were in our final high school year. Now we have a thriving little community all enthusiastically indulging in a bit of “Remember the time …”

It got me reflecting on a question that I suspect is in the back of many people’s minds.

Is the world becoming a better or a worse place?

“Your life only gets better when you do.”

Learning Modalities Part 2

As promised last time, here is a follow-up post about Learning Modalities.

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to read Part 1 please click here to open it in a new tab of your browser.

Today’s post will make a lot more sense if you have the context from Part 1. In addition, you can take a brief quiz to give you an idea of your own preferred learning modality – Visual, Auditory or Kinaesthetic.

“Seeing, feeling, hearing, are miracles, and each part and tag of me is a miracle.”

– Walt Whitman

Learning Modalities

You might find it interesting to know that each of us has a unique preference for the way in which we like to receive, learn and internally represent new information and experiences.

This knowledge can be particularly helpful in relationships and in careers that involve educating, helping or motivating people (teachers and life coaches are two examples).

Before I explain any more about these different channels of learning and representation (commonly called ‘modalities’) – and so that you do not unfairly prejudge what I have to say – I would invite you to explore your own preferred learning modality.

“He who learns but does not think is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.

– Confucius

Keeping motivated

Some people tend to struggle with keeping motivated more than others. Nonetheless, it is an issue that all of us have to confront at some point in our lives.

I remember being asked once what ‘filters’ New Insights applies to screen people who enrol to train as life coaches. The lady who asked me the question seemed genuinely surprised by my answer: “None”.

“But what about the bad eggs – those people who really aren’t cut out to do such important work,” she continued.

I explained to her that the comprehensive and rigorous nature of our home study training programme renders it ‘self selecting’.

You see, apart from being thoroughly ethical and passionate about working with people to empower them, trainee life coaches need to learn a lot about themselves and the various techniques of human motivation that they will ultimately apply in their coaching.

It’s impossible to graduate to a life of motivating others if you do not make the necessary leap in self-awareness and self motivation required to complete the programme.

And quite a few don’t!

“When you look at people who are successful, you will find that they aren’t the people who are motivated, but have consistency in their motivation.”

– Arsene Wenger

Open Your Mind

Let me ask you what may at first seem like a somewhat impertinent question:

“To what extent have you allowed your mind and your general thinking to be programmed?”

It’s a question I ask because, if you can find it within you to respond with curiosity, rather than take offence, it may just unlock a bright and fascinating new future for you.

Before we continue, allow me to momentarily lift you out of your day-to-day environment, transport you high above the comfort zone that is the world we live in and propel you out into the great empty reaches of space beyond our planet.

“With an open mind, you are the imagination of universal consciousness and the creation of the subconscious mind that wanders throughout the universe.”

― Debasish Mridha
