How to Thrive in Times of Chaos

Home » How to Thrive in Times of Chaos

The term chaos is derived from a Greek word meaning ‘void’ or ‘chasm’ and is used by astronomers to describe the state of cosmos prior to the formation of orderly matter.

In common day-to-day use the term implies a state of confusion and disorder. Many would argue that that is a very apt description of the world we live in right now.

COVID-19

2020 heralded the arrival of COVID-19, more commonly known as the coronavirus, that has caused enormous disruption around the world with huge cities in China and elsewhere – and now even the entire country of Italy – to be placed in a state of so called ’lockdown’.

Economic activity in China has been severely curtailed by the lockdowns and, given that country is an engine for global growth, the negative ramifications have been felt pretty much everywhere.

The oil price recently crashed by 34% bringing back memories of what happened in 1991 after Iraq invaded Kuwait. Global stock markets got a severe case of the jitters and tanked, posting the biggest falls since the 2008 financial crisis.

The coronavirus has certainly raised anxiety levels more than just a few notches but even without its unwelcome presence, our world is confronting the even more daunting challenge of climate change that many scientists claim is almost out of control.

Chaos – an understatement?

Add to that a new global arms race and rogue nations clamouring to get on the nuclear bandwagon and the description, ‘chaos’, starts to sound like an understatement!

In times like these it is easy to throw one’s hands up in air and give up, in the belief that the world has gone mad and we have no control over an increasingly desperate situation.

A far more positive approach

But there is a far more positive approach we can take to all that besets us; one that ensures that even in times of chaos, we thrive.

It involves focusing our attention inwards rather than outwards.

Let me explain.

In the modern day world we have become used to linking our happiness to events and trends in our external world.

Rising stock markets, positive political developments, increasing company profits, bigger salaries, larger houses, better cars, more expensive meals out, accolades from others and big wins for the sporting teams we support … these are the things on which we rely to feel good.

No wonder then, that we get so anxious when these trends turn negative and downward cycles set in.

Responsibility and inner resilience

The solution lies in accepting personal responsibility and developing inner resilience.

Taking personal responsibility for one’s life means acceptance of the fact that although our external world is constantly changing in ways that may appear either exciting or challenging, we remain solely responsible for our own happiness.

Inner resilience is an attitude to life marked by an unshakeable belief in one’s ability to adapt to whatever change the external world throws up – and still flourish.

It’s not easy to accept personal responsibility and develop inner resilience if you have spent your life blaming the external world and justifying your unhappiness on the problems you see around you. However, it is immensely liberating once you are able to accept that you have full control of your own life.

Wonderful article to be published at the time I am going through the most chaotic phase at my workplace. With the changes in systems and processes everyone has been on edge and finding it difficult to “let go” of the old ways and adjust to the new system. I have been keeping my cool coordinating everything and keeping everyone’s spirits high. This morning I guess I just used up my “reserve tank” and thanks to this article, my gauge has shot up to “Full Tank” again.
    Article much appreciated!!!??
