Your Life Your Choice

You just have to read the papers or listen to the news and you’ll probably agree that it’s one crazy world that we live in!

But what if you made a conscious decision not to tune into the media? How would the world seem to you then?

The point here is that our perceptions of the world around us are heavily influenced and shaped by groups of other people and the norms and standards that these groups choose to promote and apply.

“The world is a complex place, and the influence of the media in its representation and its power of communication and interpretation is a remarkable amplifier of emotions, and of illusions.”

– Tariq Ramadan

The Meaning of Life

What a profound subject to kick off the new year with, you may be thinking!

Well, I’m never one to turn down the prospect of an expanded readership, and if the title of the Blog Post can help achieve that without totally misleading the audience, then “Why not,” I say?

If you were looking forward to a straightforward answer to the age old question: “What is the meaning of life?” I may disappoint you. I have some ideas on that topic, of course, but there are others out there more eminently qualified to do that justice!

What I want to focus on today is how events and situations affect our lives based on the meaning we attach to them. Perhaps not as profound-sounding as the title implies, but nevertheless incredibly important in determining how we feel about ourselves and about life!

“Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when YOU are the answer.”

– Joseph Campbell

Responsibility and Choice

One of the most simple yet powerfully liberating realisations that can come from life coaching is when we appreciate that we can take almost total control of our own lives … if we want to.

I say “if we want to” because, for many people, a seemingly more convenient approach is to blame things that go wrong in their lives on other people, the government, the economy, climate change, corruption, moral decay and so on.

That mentality: “Responsibility for the problems in my life lies anywhere but with me,” may seem convenient but it always leads to disempowerment, disappointment, disillusionment and frustration.

“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Power or Force?

The inspiration for this week’s post comes from my Father’s Day gift – a fascinating book called Power vs Force by David Hawkins.

Let me be frank – the book’s not an easy read. It struck me as a curious and intriguing mix of spirituality, psychology, quantum physics and applied kinesiology.

It’s probably one of those books that you derive so much more out of it the second time round as much of the first time is spent trying to get your mind round various concepts.

Nonetheless, Hawkins shares some quite breathtaking revelations about the human organism’s capacity to distinguish, with absolute accuracy, truth from falsity.

“We change the world not by what we say or do, but as a consequence of what we have become.”

― David R. Hawkins

It’s Your Choice!

Thanks go to Lindo Morolong, one of our trainee life coaches based in Botswana, who provided the inspiration for this week’s post. Lindo queried a comment on the subject of choice made in one of our skills training manuals and  forwarded me an interesting article he had written about making choices, for an online magazine.

His article stirred my interest and prompted me to write on the subject.

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

― J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)
