Living with Uncertainty

You’ll no doubt have heard the old adage that change is the only constant in life.

Well, given the twists and turns of life in the 21st century, it would seem that we can add ‘increasing uncertainty’ as another.

If you tune into world news and events you’ll no doubt agree with the statement above. Our world, whether that be our climate, our politics, our economics, or our society in general, is becoming more unpredictable at a faster and faster rate.

For most of us, having to cope with increasing uncertainty is at best, unsettling and at worst, downright terrifying.

But why exactly is this and what can we do to adjust?

“Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.”

– John Allen Paulos

The Meaning of Life

What a profound subject to kick off the new year with, you may be thinking!

Well, I’m never one to turn down the prospect of an expanded readership, and if the title of the Blog Post can help achieve that without totally misleading the audience, then “Why not,” I say?

If you were looking forward to a straightforward answer to the age old question: “What is the meaning of life?” I may disappoint you. I have some ideas on that topic, of course, but there are others out there more eminently qualified to do that justice!

What I want to focus on today is how events and situations affect our lives based on the meaning we attach to them. Perhaps not as profound-sounding as the title implies, but nevertheless incredibly important in determining how we feel about ourselves and about life!

“Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when YOU are the answer.”

– Joseph Campbell

Wings of Hope

This Blog, as I trust loyal readers will know, is for people who want to live their best lives. It aims to inspire and to offer new insights on life, living with purpose and experiencing peace and joy.

Recent events, highlighted by – but certainly not limited to – the despicable terrorist attacks in Paris, may easily cause even the most ardent lover of life to reflect on civilisation and whether we really are evolving away from control, hatred, intolerance and brute force, towards living together in peace and harmony with kindness, gentleness and respect.

On the 13th November, the day of the deadly attacks in Paris and Baghdad and a day after the dreadful suicide bombings in Beirut, Wikipedia noted that 289 terrorist attacks had already been recorded in 2015. That’s not far off an average of one murderous incident every single day.

Tune into the news media regularly and you could be forgiven for sinking into a state of complete despair about the state of our world.

Yet, ironically, for those who can see through the desperation of those who would drag us back into the dark ages and see past the manipulation of the all pervasive media, this is a time of tumultuous change, positive transformation, rising consciousness and real hope for a far better future.

“The wings of hope carry us, soaring high above the driving winds of life.”

– Ana Jacob

Break the Cycle

As the year slowly draws to a close, I appreciate that reading personal development style blogs starts to slip down the priority listing for many people.

And yet, as we prepare for a temporary interruption in our day-to-day routines, this is without doubt the very best time to sow the seeds for positive, meaningful change in our lives.

For many, the end of the year brings with it an almost obsessive focus on trying to complete unfinished tasks and a sudden rush to put right the effects of procrastination earlier in the year.

It’s also a time when many, particularly those in the southern hemisphere where the summer holidays beckon, start their preparations for taking some time out from work and their normal obligations.

For those who desire more than just temporary relief from the ‘rat race’ this time of enforced change is the perfect time to plan to break the cycle!

Time to Break Free!

Numerous workforce surveys have shown that only about 20-30% of people are actively engaged in their jobs. The percentage who actually love what they do for a living is smaller still.

How about you? Are you doing what you love?

Or, are you doing what you’re doing because you see no other way to maintain your standard of living or even just to get the bills paid in this uncompromising world?

“Today is a new day. Don’t let your history interfere with your destiny! Let today be the day you stop being a victim of your circumstances and start taking action towards the life you want. You have the power and the time to shape your life. Break free from the poisonous victim mentality and embrace the truth of your greatness. You were not meant for a mundane or mediocre life!”

– Steve Maraboli
