Commitment, the Secret to Success

Recently, we had cause to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the launch of New Insights in South Africa (and fourteen years since the brand was originally established in the UK).

A good friend asked me about how the business had changed over the years.

He looked curious when I explained that ten years ago our biggest challenge was to convey an understanding of what life coaching is, whereas today the challenge is to stand out of the ever-increasing crowd of life coach training institutes.

“So, to what do you ascribe your success in staying in business for so long in what is a pretty fickle market?” he asked.

“Most people fail, not because of a lack of desire, but because of a lack of commitment.”

– Vince Lombardi

A Creed To Live By

At this early stage of the year with the holidays and New Year’s celebrations still fresh in the mind many people have lofty ideas about what they’d like to achieve and the changes that they’d like to make.

Sadly, most New Year’s resolutions are simply that – ideas – lacking in specifics, difficult to account for and often without properly thought through timelines. As a result, most ‘resolutions’ are broken surprisingly soon after the whole ‘back-to-work,-school-and-life-as-usual’ routine kicks in again.

In life coaching we advocate the setting of goals rather than simple resolutions and we have tools to ensure that professionally crafted goals have a great chance of being achieved.

But an easier way to bring about fundamental change in your life is to adopt a simple yet powerful creed to live by and – if you’re serious about it – one that you can ask those close to you to hold you to!

While surfing the Internet one day I came across a wonderful little story, by an unknown author, with a short but inspiring message that offers exactly that … a simple yet powerful creed to live by.

I’d like to share it with you. Even if you’ve seen it before, I think you’ll find it’s worth reading again.

“A man’s got to have a code, a creed to live by.”

– John Wayne

On Becoming More

A very happy new year to all readers of Life Coaching Insights. May it turn out to be a very special one for all of us!

Over the weekend that just passed I began thinking about what might be appropriate as the first blog post of the new year when into my inbox popped an unsolicited message from one of our trainee life coaches – who is close to completing certification – titled: ‘On Becoming a Life Coach’.

What followed was one of the most beautiful and inspiring pieces of its kind that I have read … and it immediately crossed my mind to share it with you.

So with sincere thanks to Hanlie van Tonder and with her permission, I have published it here.

I hope it may inspire you to embark on your own journey to ‘becoming more’ (whatever that may mean for you) over the course of the year ahead.

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.

– Henry David Thoreau

Visualise to Realise

Visualise a desired future situation with great clarity, feeling and regularity and you are bound to realise it.

As all good life coaches know, the process of setting great goals is an important stepping stone towards living the life you love. But just setting goals is not enough to ensure they are achieved.

You have to really want what it is that you are chasing. Or as some would say, you have to demonstrate and hold clear intent.

Visualisation is such a demonstration of intent.

“My method is different. I do not rush into actual work. When I get a new idea, I start at once building it up in my imagination, and make improvements and operate the device in my mind. When I have gone so far as to embody everything in my invention, every possible improvement I can think of, and when I see no fault anywhere, I put into concrete form the final product of my brain.”

– Nikola Tesla (famous electrical inventor)

Life Coaching and Life Purpose

Robert Byrne is credited with saying: “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”

At New Insights we love to embrace that saying because we firmly believe that life takes on a whole new dimension and meaning once you are living it ‘on purpose’.

“You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it fearlessly.”

― Steve Maraboli
