Just the One

We live in what seems to be an immensely challenged and challenging world.

The vast and growing number of people living on earth today pose an unprecedented challenge to the ability of our planet and its environment to sustain life as we have always known it.

At the same time, despite quantum advances in technology life, for most of us, is more challenging than ever before.

We are living in a time when it is easy to contemplate these issues and conclude that we are, individually, of little or no significance or relevance in the greater scheme of things.

A simple glance skywards on a clear night might be enough to reinforce the perception that each of is no more important than a tiny ant in a huge anthill or a grain of sand in the desert.

“I am just one human being.”

The Power Within You

I’ve heard it said so many times … “life is tough”, “life is an uphill battle”, “life is such a struggle”.

Why is it that so many people feel aggrieved about the quality of their life? Surely that’s not how life on earth was intended to be?

What’s going on here?

If you are someone who is finding life to be a daily grind, or you know of someone who feels that way then I would like to offer you some thoughts on how to come to terms with and deal with this debilitating feeling.

“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”

– Marcus Aurelius

The Six Human Needs

Abraham Maslow developed what is now commonly known as ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’.

He postulated that human needs are arranged in a hierarchy starting with our most basic physiological needs for food, water and air, to safety, to love, to esteem and finally to our highest need, namely self actualisation.

The hierarchical arrangement suggests that only once the most basic need is met can we aspire to the next level of need, and only once that need is met can we aspire to the next highest need, and so on and so on.

“To deal with individual human needs at the everyday level can be noble sometimes.”

– Jimmy Carter

Contemplating One’s Significance

There has been a lot of speculation about what might or might not happen on December 21st 2012, the date that most researchers agree marks the end of the Mayan calendar.

Predictions by some of the onset of the end of the world and by others of the coming of a new era of consciousness can easily leave one contemplating one’s own insignificance in the grand scheme of the Universe.

“The significance of a man is not in what he attains, but rather what he longs to attain.”

– Kahili Gibran

Growing Self Belief

Lack of self confidence is a debilitating affliction that bedevils a great many people.

And yet, it’s a simple state of mind that separates those who live life tentatively, with uncertainty, and those who live life boldly and to the very fullest.

“Remember that, ultimately, it’s not about how things look to other people. It’s about how things feel inside, to you!”

– Bill Burridge
