Understanding how to manage your time wisely is highly relevant, whether you happen to be a life coach or just about anyone else for that matter.

Time management is a subject close to everyone’s heart nowadays, given the hectic lives we tend to lead in these interesting times!

Today, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to writer and blogger, Jack Milgram, who has done some useful research on time management and come up with what I think is a very well constructed and helpful summary that I\’d like to share with you.

Read on to hear what Jack has to say, before accessing his excellent 15-point infographic.

“Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone will determine how that coin will be spent. Be careful that you do not let other people spend it for you.”

– Carl Sandburg

A crucial competency

The competencies required to be an accomplished, professional coach encompass a wide range of skills and abilities. While some competencies depend on the niche, other skills are crucial for all coaches. And time management is one of them.

Why is it that coaches should be particularly vigilant about managing their time wisely?

Well, aside from all else, there’s one major reason: coaches should set an example for their clients.

The standards for coaches are always higher; after all, if your clients were good at managing their time and arranging their lives in the right way, they wouldn’t resort to your services. They have to look up to you in a way. If they see that you are always on schedule, able to meet any deadline, and generally in control of your time, they will have an easier time trusting you and relying on your judgement.

Here’s the thing:

You could undoubtedly benefit from learning some time management techniques yourself. Not only would you become more productive, but you would also be equipped with useful tools to help your clients.

Motivation triggers

Take, for instance, the skill of establishing necessary motivation triggers (New Insight uses the term ‘milestones’).

Some people have a hard time focusing on a big goal or project.

It’s hardly surprising!

No matter how important it is to finish a complex project in time, or how exciting a big personal goal may seem, a really big scope of work can be very daunting and thus discouraging.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs to be done. But motivation triggers allow you to break down your workflow into smaller steps, setting short-term goals, or milestones, that don’t seem too difficult to accomplish.

And here is why every career coach, lifestyle coach, and fitness coach should consider incorporating motivation triggers into their lives and their coaching:

Motivation triggers are all about basic human psychology. Using this gradual, measured approach to large and/or complex tasks will help you and your clients regain control of any schedule.

Another technique you can think about incorporating is prioritising exercises. These prove invaluable to any coach who wants to teach people how to distinguish between primary and secondary objectives.

Make your coaching more effective

So, here’s the bottom line:

You can make your coaching a lot more effective by enhancing your time management skills and learning new ways to organise your schedule.

  2. The 15 points are an expansion of the system I have designed for the clients that I have gone onto mentor after they have completed the New Insights Life Coaching course. It is a very common stumbling block for most of us but with a plan and a burning desire to convert our stumbling block into a stepping stone, we can master the art of effective time management, particularly if we partner with a supportive life coach or mentor. All it takes is a sharp awareness of ourselves and our habits, some time to reflect and asking ourselves 2 fundamental questions: What can I learn from this (inefficient use of my time)? What could I do differently?
